BEP REFORM

Governor Bredesen Proposes Sweeping Changes to the BEP Funding Formula!

Knox County Schools could see up to $12 million increase for FY08,
with a total of over $26 million increase in annual state funding
as the new funding formula is completed.

How did this happen?

Governor Bredesen's recent "BEP 2.0" proposal is a bipartisan effort!

Led by bipartisan leadership in the legislative branch and the executive branch, Democrats and Republicans, we have been successful in convincing Governor Bredesen that the time for BEP funding formula reform is NOW.

Thanks to leadership from Senator Jamie Woodson, Senator Randy McNally, Senator Tim Burchett, County Mayor Mike Ragsdale, the Board of Education, and YOUR e-mails, notes, and phone calls demanding BEP funding reform, we ARE making a difference for the children of Knox County.

If you agree that the General Assembly should pass "BEP 2.0"
then e-mail or call with your thanks to our Knox County leaders
and to show your support for the following points:

- If approved, this will be the greatest increase in state funding that Knox County has seen since the BEP was enacted in 1992, and it will go a long way toward addressing students' needs, including implementation of an 'Excellence through Literacy' K-12 initiative.

- Momentum currently exists for improving education funding around the state and we must act while we have this momentum. The time to act is NOW.

- The new BEP funding model is clear, fair and easy to understand.

- We must support the funding mechanism for these changes whether it is through an increase in the tobacco tax or other sources.

- Our children deserve this investment in their future, and based on our economic history, our local economy immediately will benefit threefold for every dollar we invest in education today.

Please share this information with all PTA leaders and members, neighbors, and friends of education. Messages from concerned citizens in Knox County should make this BEP funding reform effort successful -
